APARTMENT 601
Apartment 601 is a transformative renovation of a historic Melbourne building’s top floors, creating a multigenerational home that blends architectural innovation, cultural sensitivity, and regulatory compliance. Originally part of the Melbourne Sports Depot, the project began in 2019 as a leak investigation and evolved into a full-scale redevelopment.
Key upgrades included a new lift system, the consolidation of common areas, and the addition of a new rooftop level—adding 67 sqm of indoor and 67 sqm of outdoor space. The residence features four bedrooms, a study, extensive storage, and a 14-seat dining area, all designed around the family's cultural values and feng shui principles.
Undertaken during COVID-19 lockdowns, the project faced major structural and compliance challenges, including retrofitting unprotected steel elements to meet fire safety standards. Despite the complexity, the result is a striking, resilient home anchored by a sculptural staircase and crowned with a rooftop winter garden. Apartment 601 exemplifies adaptive reuse and refined urban living within a heritage context.
