205

Housed within the iconic HERO building, originally the Russell Street Telephone exchange, this apartment was completely gutted in order to create the additional bathroom and walk in closet required by the client. Working with landmark or heritage buildings can have its difficulties, but also advantages, a polished concrete floor was made possible by the discovery of concrete underneath the apartments sub-floor. Concrete was the foundation of the design both structurally and cosmetically.

The success of this project lies in the marriage of material, both new and existing to create the bold but sophisticated aesthetic.

CLIENT BRIEF

The Clients wanted to create an additional bathroom and walk in closet for their daughter. As well as an entire cosmetic upgrade of the interior space, including a glamorous new kitchen

KEY MATERIALS

Concrete was the foundation of the design both structurally and cosmetically. A polished concrete floor was the main focal point and a dramatic backdrop for the rest of the apartment.

CHALLENGES

Managing expectations and relationships with neighboring apartments was challenging, but we navigated this by having regular body corporate meetings and easily accessible information available to all residents.

PROJECT SUCCESSES

The successful cohesion of materials, both new and existing, complement the history of a heritage building, with a modern twist that makes it truly timeless Equally, creating the additional bathroom almost out of nowhere was a great achievement.
